Two Mississippi Cities Are Reunited with Light Following Hurricaine Katrina

During Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005, portions of the Biloxi Bay Bridge were damaged, leaving the interdependent cities of Biloxi and Ocean Springs, Mississippi, separated. According to Architectural Lighting Magazine, the firm responsible for the rebuilding of the bridge wanted to design it around the theme of reconnection and unity and decided to achieve this largely using bridge lighting. The most prominent feature of the bridge’s lighting is its necklace of light. Stretching for the bridge’s entire 1.6mi span are 55w electrodeless QL lamps with a 4,000K color temperature, creating a feeling of a never ending string of light. Bridge designers also mounted 100w and 250w metal halide lamps at the base of the bridge’s piers to further heighten the feeling of expansive light. Lastly, 70w metal halide lamps were also installed underneath the bridge so that the park on the shore beneath the bridge that would be built would have adequate illumination.

BulbAmerica has a wide selection of high performing and durable metal halide lamps perfect for outdoor applications. We also have an extensive catalog of other outdoor lighting products so you can get the lighting you need, how you like it. If you have anymore questions please leave a comment or question on our blog or Facebook or give us a call at 1-877-622-0897.

Halogen and Metal Halide Light Bulbs: Overlooked Options for Eco-Friendly Lighting

When it comes to environmentally friendly light bulbs, consumers have more options than they usually think. Of course, CFLs and LEDs are the longest lasting and most efficient options for green lighting, but customers should be cognizant of the fact that neither of these technologies is ideal in every situation and they do not always provide the highest quality light or CRI. Halogen and metal halide bulbs are often overlooked because of their technological likenesses to incandescent and HID bulbs respectively, as well as their short life spans. Halogen light bulbs can typically burn from anywhere between 2,000 – and 10,000hrs before failing. Halogen bulbs are available for most bulb types and are used in nearly all applications from home & garden lighting, stage lighting, aviation lighting, and much more. The reasons for this are simple: halogens have among the best and brightest light and feature light with a rating near, if not at 100CRI. This means that halogens can render color nearly identically to sun light’s rendering of color. Though CFLs and LEDs do not expend as much energy generating heat as halogens do and burn longer, they often cannot match the brightness and wonderful color quality of halogens. For these reasons halogen MR16s and PARs are great options. Furthermore, because the light created by halogens lends itself to being focused, halogens are good for both general illumination and more focused applications like track and task lighting.

Metal halide bulbs are a similar story. Ranging for 15,000-20,000hrs, metal halide light bulbs last for a long time while producing light in the 60-90CRI range. What is remarkable about metal halide is their luminous efficacy, or efficiency. Metal halides produce between 65-115lm/w, which makes them an excellent bright light source. Because of their excellent CRI and luminous efficacy, metal halides are great for general illumination—making metal halide PARs a good choice for larger spaces that require great light like museums. Metal halide MR16s and PAR20s are also good for track lighting.

The bottom line is that for environmentally friendly lighting CFLs, LEDs, halogens, and metal halide bulbs are all good options. Though CFLs and LEDs are the longest lasting and among the most efficient, often by using them you sacrifice light bulbs that feature better light and color quality. Though halogen and metal halide bulbs are not the greenest, they may be the best compromise of environmentally friendly lighting and great light quality available. Chauvet Brings LED Light to Waikiki Resort

The Sheraton Waikiki, one of Waikiki, Hawaii’s most popular hotel resorts recently needed outdoor lighting for some of its outdoor beach lounge areas. Sheraton Waikiki's management wanted to complement the day-time splendor of Waikiki’s beaches with rich and colorful night lighting. The management turned to none other than Chauvet and their powerful and efficient COLORADO 1 LED PAR cans. The expansive Sheraton resort used 41 COLRADO 1 units in the water park playground area and 33 COLORado 1s in the adults’ beach lounge. The LED PARs were used to highlight palm tress and other architectural features in order to add flare and additional light to the area. The COLORADO 1 features 36 1-watt RGB LEDs for bright and saturated colors that can last an extremely long time without fading. The management utilized the COLORado 1s stand alone modes so the units could be set up easily and operate independently of each other. Dress Your Home or Office Up With Halogen Candelabra and Globe Light Bulbs

When it comes to decorative light bulbs you have many choices, not only between bulb types but also bulb shapes. By decorative light bulbs I mean bulbs that are fully exposed or partially exposed. Decorative bulbs typically fall within two general families: candelabra and globe shape light bulbs. Though the candelabra family of light bulbs include far more shapes than the globe, the globe shape is very common, especially in bathrooms and theatres. Among the most popular globe shape bulbs is the G25. The G25 is available in halogen and CFL types, allowing you to achieve two very different types of light. Halogen G25s are available in various wattages and come with different types of glass envelopes. Whether you choose a halogen G25 with a crystal or standard glass envelope, your bathroom, theatre, or wherever else you decide to use one will benefit from the bright, elegant light. CFL G25 shapes offer light in 2,700K and 3,000K versions and at a quarter of the wattage of halogen G25 bulbs. Furthermore, CFL G25s will not produce nearly as much heat as a halogen, making them the better choice where you need your space to remain cool. The one downside of CFL G25s is that they do not have the option of the more aesthetically appealing clear glass envelope.
Candelabra bulbs generally refer to a family of shapes including B10, B13, C7, C9, crystallite, flame and more. Candelabras are offered in numerous bulb types including CFLs, LEDs, halogens, and incandescent. As you may or may not know, candelabra bulbs are used in numerous applications from wall sconces, to chandeliers, to electric candelabras, and other applications. Incandescent and halogen candelabras produce similar types of light, though halogens typically last a bit longer. Incandescent and halogen candelabras are still the standard for chandeliers and sconces where an unconventional bulb-shape can be disruptive. Though this may be true, CFL and LED candelabras feature outstanding energy savings and produce close to no perceptible heat. Furthermore, Osram’s LED candelabras feature color changing which can really liven up any room.
Hopefully this guide to halogen decorative light bulbs has been informative and you now feel confident in choosing the right one for you. In addition to a wide selection of halogen candelabras and globes to choose from, BulbAmerica also has an extensive catalog of LEDs, stage lighting, CFL, medical lighting, MR16s, and automotive lighting products to choose from, so be sure to check them out. LEDs Help Keep the Current Flowing in Kansas City

Spanning Highway 470 in Kansas City is the Power & Light Utility Bridge, which carries the city’s electrical cables, rather than people, from the Crossroads Arts District to the Power & Light Entertainment District. The city’s vision for the Power & Light Utility Bridge was to make this infrastructural necessity an attractive part of the Kansas City cityscape. According to Architectural Lighting, the Power & Light Utility Bridge is 163ft long set of trusses featuring steel panels perforated with holes of varying diameters to give them a swirling and undulating appearance. At night, the panels are illuminated 52 60w RGB color changing wash units and accentuate the undulating quality of the panels’ design.

The Power & Light Utility Bridge represents a creative and aesthetically pleasing solution to a infrastructural problem, how to get electricity from one side to the city to another with a highway in between. The use of outdoor LED color changing units is a testament to the breadth of applications for LED technology and its durability and usability.

In the Spotlight #10: Flood Lighting

Exterior lighting for your home or business is ensures that the perimeter of your space remains safe and secure. Individuals considering exterior lighting for the first time may be a little overwhelmed regarding what light bulbs they should choose and why, so in this article I will give you advice that will hopefully help you make the right decision for your needs. For your home’s exterior lighting, the most common light bulbs used are flood light bulbs and the common fixtures are landscape flood fixtures. The term 'Flood' does not designate a light bulb type or shape but a beam angle. The most commonly used flood bulbs for the home are incandescent, halogen, CFL, metal halide light, and LED bulbs. The commonly used flood bulb shapes are PAR36s, PAR38s, PAR46s,PAR56s, R, and BR, shaped bulbs. These shapes are offered in nearly every bulb type. You should know that triple and quad tube and 2-pin base bulbs CFLs are also used in outdoor lighting. Furthermore, if you are looking to add some excitement to your flood light you should check out some of the colored CFL and incandescent PAR38s available.
In addition to landscape flood fixtures, industrial exterior lighting often uses shoe-box and curved-back housings. Industrial flood lighting, in addition to the bulbs used in home flood lighting applications use metal halide, low pressure, and high pressure sodium bulbs. These bulbs are longer lasting and feature better luminous efficacy than incandescent and halogen bulbs, but feature less desirable color temperatures which may not matter in industrial and commercial areas. The exception to this general rule is certain metal halide lamps, which feature wonderful light quality and variable color temperature.
BulbAmerica has everything you need for your exterior lighting needs. In addition to incandescent, halogen, CFL, metal halide light, and LED floods we also have an extensive catalog of MR16s, CFLs, stage lighting, medical lighting, and automotive lighting products. Be sure to check it all out! Leave a question or comment on our blog or Facebook or call us at 1-888-505-2111.

In the Spotlight #9: An Introduction to Aviation Lighting

Though lighting is often taken for granted, its importance to the safety and everyday goings on of nearly everything in our lives is undeniable. This is certainly the case when it comes aviation, where lighting is not only vital for runway operation and the pilot’s vision, but also as a means of communication. In this article I will introduce common light bulbs for the airfield and the aircraft to readers unfamiliar with them, so let’s get started.

If you’ve ever flown in an airplane at night, you probably sensed that airfield lighting is vital to the safe operation of aircraft and airport personnel. As you can probably imagine, the numerous elevated lights, inset lights, edge lights, guard lights, and other types of airfield fixtures that illuminate airfields require numerous different types of light bulbs. Airfields need bright light sources that are durable and as low maintenance as possible. Therefore, long lasting halogens and certain HID light sources are commonly used. Halogen bulbs are widely used for their extremely bright white light along with their longer life spans. All types of halogen bulbs are used including MR16s, H-shape aircraft bulbs, PAR38s, PAR56s, and PAR64s. Metal halide and low pressure sodium bulbs are also common in airfield lighting. As LEDs improve, airports and airfields are also turning to them for their long lasting light and tremendous durability.

Look up at an airplane passing overhead at night and you will likely see at least one pair of lights either blinking or statically lit. Air planes have many light bulbs. On the airplane’s exterior there are usually fixtures on the landing gear/wheel lights, navigation lights on the end of the wings, anti-collision lights on top of the plane, lights above engine, and other lights. The interior of the plane features even more light bulbs shining brightly in both the cockpit and the cabins. In many of these applications, incandescent bulbs and halogen light bulbs have typically been the standard. With the rise of LEDs however, many of the aircraft’s external and internal incandescent and HID lighting have been replaced with them because they are extremely durable and long lasting. LEDs are particularly useful in cockpit lighting because they take up little space, do not require ballasts, and produce little to no heat. For applications like landing gear however, there is no beating halogen or metal halide lamps. Metal halide and halogen lamps produce the bright white light necessary for the safe operation of the aircraft in the air and on the ground. The excellent performance and light quality of metal halide lamps also makes them a popular choice.

Hopefully this article has been moderately informative and you have learned something about the wide, wild world of aviation lighting. If you have anymore questions please leave a comment or question on our blog or Facebook or give us a call at 1-877-622-0897.
