The Infinity Bridge Treats Northeast England to Never Ending Light

Spanning the River Tees in north eastern England is the Infinity Bridge, an elegant pedestrian bridge that opened in the spring of 2009. The nearly 800ft bridge is unique during the day, but at night is when it truly comes to life. The British architectural firm Speirs & Major was responsible for designing a lighting scheme that would accentuate the already innovating bridge design. According to Speirs & Major, cool white lights were used to illuminate the asymmetrical arch that suspends the bridge and also completes the mathematical symbol of infinity, which the arche’s reflection in the water completes and for which the bridge is named. The bridge’s piers and decks are illuminated by wash units installed on brackets extending away from the bridge in order to make the wash units unobtrusive. Speirs & Major also designed an LED system along the bridge’s deck that interacts with pedestrians crossing it, thus illuminating and leading the pedestrians across the bridge with light.

Washes and LED architectural lighting is being used all over the world in a nearly limitless range of architectural applications. Spiers & Major’s design at the Infinity Bridge is another example of the potential of architectural lighting and how it can be both a highly noticeable yet understated architectural feature. When it comes to architectural and LED outdoor lighting the design is up to you, but at least we can provide you with the lights. BulbAmerica offers a wide range of outdoor LED and wash fixtures to choose from so check it out today! The Balanced Beam: Making the Case for Halogens

Are all environmentally friendly light bulbs as perfect a lighting solution as the media hypes them to be? In the April/May 2010 issue of Architectural Lighting, Elizabeth Donoff, AL’s editor, expressed uneasiness concerning the transition to eco-friendly lighting, stating, “[W]hat is of greatest concern to me is that this switch in lighting sources can be simplified to an either-or proposition.” Donoff observed that the attention and praise and the public has forced a some technologically immature products onto the market while keeping higher performing lighting options from consumers’ views. One of the most consistently high performing and environmentally friendly light sources are halogen light bulbs, a technology often overlooked amidst demands for new eco-friendly lighting

Lasting anywhere from 2,000 hours to 12,000 hours, halogen light bulbs achieve life hour ratings significantly better than incandescent bulbs but when compared to CFLs and LEDs underperform. Industry leaders have found that this underperformance is often exaggerated because consumers focus too much on how long a bulb lasts rather than its efficiency and disregard what the actual qualities of light of LED and CFL bulbs are. With regard to efficiency, or luminous efficacy (lm/W), halogen bulbs have an efficiency rating of between 10-30lm/W and LED light bulbs a rating of anywhere between 17 lm/W to 49 lm/W. This means that halogen bulbs can perform as well and sometimes better than LED bulbs. Though the efficiency of LED bulbs is promising, studies by consumer advocacy groups have found that there is little performance uniformity among LED bulbs: some are high performing whereas others do not even outperform incandescent bulbs. Though CFLs are more efficient than both halogen and LED bulbs, they use small amounts (1mg – 5mg) of mercury, a neurotoxin, and thus present environmental concerns.

Halogen bulbs often surpass LEDs and CFLs in color faithfulness and in their breadth of application. With regard to color faithfulness, or the color rendering index (CRI), LEDs and CFLs are inconsistent. A 2009 report by the Pacific Northwest Laboratory for the US Department of Energy found that LED replacement bulbs for directional MR16s and more diffuse light sources like A-shape bulbs had CRI scores at best 85 and at worst below 70. In other words, LED replacement bulbs may not be able to accurately display the colors in your home, restaurant, or store. Though CFLs fare slightly better than LEDs, halogens are by and large the best choice when color is important, such as in spaces like a kitchen or retail environment. Another advantage of halogens over LEDs and CFLs is that halogens produce a versatile light. In low voltage 12v MR16s, halogens can produce a highly focusable light perfect for spot or broader beams, whereas in PAR shapes halogen bulbs are exceptional for flood lighting and general illumination. Some LEDs struggle as general light sources and some CFLs are inconsistent as directional light sources. Though LEDs and CFLs may be the longest lasting and most efficient, sometimes they are not the best choice in certain applications and consumers’ lighting may suffer because of it. Halogens on the other hand are found in nearly all applications from stage & studio lighting to surgical and medical lighting. With respect to LED replacement bulbs, a 2010 report for the US Department of Energy on LED bulbs found that some of them do not correspond to the dimensions of the shapes they are replacing as specified by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) codes.

BulbAmerica has comprehensive light bulb offerings to give consumers more lighting options that strike the balance between efficiency, long lasting bulb life, and quality light. If you have any further questions or concerns please leave them on our blog or Facebook or call us at 1-877-622-0897.

New York's Highline Park Puts Urban Parks in a Whole New Light

New York City’s Highline Park is one of the most innovative urban green spaces to be designed and implemented in recent memory. The Highline Park sits atop an old railroad trestle that was built in the 1930s and was abandoned in the 1980s. Stretching from Manhattan’s Meatpacking District to 34th Street along the West Side, the Highline stretches for 1.5 miles and is elevated nearly 30ft above the ground. The Highline provides its visitors amazing views of Manhattan’s skyline and Hudson River and the unique experience floating above the city’s energetic streets below. The Highline’s designers created a lively contrast between the street and the park by interspersing numerous types of vegetation and modern walkways and benches. To thoroughly integrate the Highline into the cityscape, the bridge is kept open until 10pm every night. In order to realize the late night operation of the park, bridge designers sought out long lasting, durable, and versatile lighting solutions that would make the park both attractive and safe to use at night. As Architectural Lighting reported, park designers sought out LED units that could be kept low to illuminate the Highline’s paths while leaving the spectacular views the bridge affords unobstructed. Lighting designers used floor mounted linear one-watt LED modules that were planted in the vegetation surrounding the paths, illuminating the plants and therefore showing the pedestrians where the plants weren’t, and cleverly rendering the path visible.
BulbAmerica stocks a wide variety of outdoor LED products perfect for your garden and park. Just because the sun goes down does not mean you should head indoors, so checkout all of outdoor LED products for general illumination and color changing. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge Tilts and Lights Up the Night in England

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge, located in Newcastle, England is one the most unique bridges in the world for two reasons: its tilting walkway and its architectural lighting. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge, completed in 2001, is the world’s first tilt ridge, meaning that the pedestrian walkway tilts along a 90˚ arc to make for the ships traveling along the River Tyne, the river the bridge spans. Though the bridge is undoubtedly a remarkable feat of imaginative engineering, it also features noteworthy architectural lighting. According to lighting design firm Speirs & Major, the tilting walkway presented the firm with a unique opportunity to not only use the bridge and its suspending arch as a lighting element, but to use the underside of the walkway to capitalize on the river’s reflective surface so that it could also be as an architectural texture of the bridge’s lighting. On both sides of the walkway and on the suspending arch as well, linear LED modules provide white light and on occasion color changing light that achieves a captivating effect. Metal halide lamps are also used to signal that the bridge will be tilting to allow a ship to pass underneath.

BulbAmerica has both the LED and metal halide lighting products you need to complete or add necessary flare to any project of yours. GE Scores a Touchown at the New Dallas Cowboys Stadium with its Powerful LED Lighting

The new Dallas Cowboys stadium, which opened last year in 2009, is the largest domed stadium in the world, features the world’s largest high definition video screen, and is the largest of any of the NFL stadiums. Stadiums as massive as the Cowboys’ pose many problems when it comes to lighting, namely how to efficiently and evenly light such an enormous space while providing light quality sufficient for HDTV live video broadcasting and audience comfort. Cowboys Stadium designers sought out GE’s expertise in large scale architectural LED lighting to plan and implement a lighting solution for the mighty Texas football stadium. GE provided more than 750 1,5000w LED luminaires and an extra 60 of the same 1,500w LED luminaires for security lighting at the stadium. GE and the stadium lighting designers chose LEDs over high performing metal halides because they would last multiple years rather than months, and would not require time to reach full luminosity following a blackout, a situation which can potentially present safety hazards. Furthermore, GE’s LED luminaires proved more than adequate for creating an even blanket of light to provide excellent visibility in the stadium and optimal light conditions for the extremely sensitive HDTV video cameras used for broadcasting.

Though BulbAmerica may not have what you need for lighting Cowboys Stadium or a venue its size, we have a wide selection of outdoor LED products and GE lighting products that will provide you with the light you need. Do not hesitate to leave a comment or question on our blog or Facebook, or give us a call at 1-877-622-0897. Check us out today, and go for the endzone with BulbAmerica!

Down By the Bay..: San Diego's Coronado Bridge is Set to Get Brilliant LED Lighting

Built in 1969, the Coronado Bridge crosses over San Diego Bay and links San Diego with Coronado, California. Over the past year the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the Port of San Diego have been hosting a competition among lighting designers and architects to design the bridge's architectural lighting for the massive 11,179ft and, at its highest, 200ft tall prestressed concrete and steel girder bridge. The winning lighting design chosen by Caltrans and the Port of San Diego was submitted by a joint American and British architectural team that will install programmable LED modules that are fully sustainable and will be powered by wind turbines, making these LED lights that much easier on the energy grid. The LED modules will accentuate the splendor of the San Diego bay and the bridge itself. LED modules will be installed on the exterior walls of the roadway and will light according to programs that will control the variable color, rate, and intensity depending on the traffic. The LED lighting on the upper part of the bridge will also interact with the ships that regularly pass underneath the bridge. The bridge’s second set of LED modules will be installed on the bridge’s enormous pillars. The project will likely be completed in the next couple years and we’ll write an article on it when it’s complete!

The design intended for the Coronado Bridge highlights the endless possibilities of LED lighting and their durability. BulbAmerica stocks a wide variety of outdoor LED and other LED products to check out what we have today. Please do not hesitate to leave us a comment or a question on our blog or Facebook, or call us at 1-877-622-0897.

American DJ's Revo Scan LED: Say Hello to the Scanner REVOlution

Scanner effects have traditionally relied upon bright directional light sources like halogen and HID lamps to provide sufficient light for the mirror driven effect unit to produce a bright and exciting effect. Halogen bulbs, and less so HIDs, have proved to be somewhat inefficient due to the large amounts of heat they produce and thus require effect units powered by them to operate in duty cycles, or alternating periods of time in which the unit does not operate in order to avoid overheating. LED DJ effects have revolutionized scanners and other effects because they do not require duty cycles and have a very small energy draw. American DJ’s Revo Scan LED is one of the best LED scanners available. The Revo Scan LED remains cool and uses a meager 12w for its operation, allowing you the room to run more lights and other equipment on your circuits. The Revo Scan LED also saves you time and money replacing bulbs, the 52 RGBW LED bulbs are each rated at 100,000 hours, ensuring that the Revo Scan will burn bright for a long time. With a similar output to a 250w halogen lamp, the LEDs in this unit coupled with the 21˚ of its optics means that your dance floor will be swirling with color and light.

Like all American DJ lighting effects, the Revo Scan LED is easy to use and versatile when it comes to operation, making it a formidable lighting effect for any DJ or club owner. Whether you run it in DMX, Sound Active, or Master/Slave mode, the Revo Scan will bring life to your music. If you are looking to make the most out of your Revo Scan, trying using a haze or fog machine to emphasize the sharpness of the Revo Scan’s beams.

BulbAmerica has a wide selection of American DJ LED lighting effects so be sure to check them all out today! As usual, be sure to leave a comment or question on our blog or Facebook or call us at 1-877-622-0897 with any additional concerns.

One of the World's Biggest LED Screen Lands at King's Tower in Saudi Arabia

By now, many of us have probably seen an LED screen at least once, whether it be at a sporting event, an airport or train station, an outdoor concert, or numerous other types of events. The recently completed King’s Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, features the world’s largest LED screen to be integrated into a building’s façade. According to LEDs Magazine, the 107,700sqft LED screen is truly massive, spanning 21 floors on the north and south façade of the building and 16 floors on the western façade. The screen is comprised of 5 million LEDs and was constructed by the French company, Citiled. What is truly striking about the screen at King’s Tower is not only the 16.7 million colors that can be produced or the incredible high resolution animations, but the fact that the screen is transparent and the building’s windows can be seen illuminated behind the screen. The screen’s transparency gives the screen an organic feel and makes it seem as if it exists naturally on the building’s surface.

LED technology continues to push the boundaries of architecture as the King’s Tower LED screen makes apparent. The flexibility, durability, and compact size of LEDs makes them useful in nearly ever application from LED screens, to LED bulbs, to LED PAR cans and much, much more. The Peace Bridge, opened in 1927, connects Buffalo, New York with Ontario, Canada and celebrates the long history of peaceful relations and cooperation between the United States and Canada. According to Architectural Record, until recently the Peace Bridge was illuminated with high-pressure sodium lamps and produced unappealing color temperatures and glare that was uncomfortable for motorists crossing the bridge. The high-pressure sodium lamps lighting up the 5,800ft long bridge were replaced with 695 LED luminaires that are connected to via fiber optic cables to a computer in Fort Erie, Ontario where the luminaires are controlled. The massive lighting system created at the Peace Bridge produces nightly light shows and also special lighting arrangements for holidays.

The Peace Bridge represents another example of the ways in which LED technology can revitalize infrastructure and turn it into a meaningful architectural feature that the public can enjoy. Singapore's ILUMA Complex Utilizes CFLs to Realize its Radical Architectural Lighting

For almost the entirety of the last decade LEDs have dominated architectural lighting, in particular the lighting of the façades of structures. The reasons for this are well known: LEDs and LED modules are durable, can be used in any configuration, light instantly, and can be individually addressed and controlled using controllers and computer software. Though LEDs have dominated, the imaginatively designed ILUMA entertainment complex in downtown Singapore demonstrates that LEDs are not the only option for façade lighting. The ILUMA complex houses a parking garage, stores, a theatre, and performance spaces and signals the further maturation of Singapore’s cultural hub, Bugis Street. According to the lighting designers of ILUMA’s façade, Realities:United, the façade’s design is comprised of 3,000 polycarbonate modules covering an area of about 54,000sqft. Of the 3,000 polycarbonate modules, 1,900 contain 4,000K compact fluorescent (CFL) lamps, giving the complex’s exterior swaths of warm light that is further diffused by its polycarbonate housings. The CFL lamps used in ILUMA’s façade are dimmable and are integrated in a system that interacts with pedestrians passing by and treats them to waves of light and unpredictable illuminated shapes. Realities:United implemented their CFL lamp-based installation to provide an alternative to the rigidity and commonness of LED façades, by engineering a somewhat shapeless and more abstract lighting scheme for the ILUMA comlplex.

BulbAmerica has a wide selection of CFL and LED products for outdoor lighting and general illumination purposes to keep your space looking its best. If you have any questions please leave a comment or question on our blog or Facebook or give us a call at 1-877-622-0897.
