With the amazing new SAD light box therapy
solutions that can be found at BulbAmerica, it is now more important
than ever to finally understand the real life benefits. Now, it's not
just the eyes that have it; it's the ears, too. To relieve the symptoms
of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), European researchers are exploring
the use of Bright Light Bulb Therapy (BLT) via the ear canal and they’re seeing promising results.
In a recent study, ten out of 13 SAD suffers reported a complete
remission of symptoms after wearing earplugs outfitted with light
emitting diodes (LEDs) for approximately four weeks. Typical treatment
requires a chronic SAD suffer to sit within 12 inches of a fluorescent
or LED light source (at a strength of 10,000 lux) so the light can
target serotonin levels through the patient's eyes. These daily
sessions routinely last approximately 30 to 35 minutes. Contrastively,
in the Finnish study, participants were instructed to wear earplugs with
a photic energy of 6.0-8.5 lumens in both ears, for between just 8 to
12 minutes, five times a week. The authors of the LED earplug pilot
study are encouraged enough with the results to strongly suggest that
further studies be conducted.
If this future investigation yields even more positive results, the
news could very well be music to the ears of the 25 percent of Americans
diagnosed with SAD. For one thing, this alternative treatment may prove
suitable for consumers with medical conditions that affect the eyes
(such as diabetes) as well as those who take medications that increase
photo-sensitivity. It should also greatly reduce the possibility of
accidental UV damage to the eyes of consumers who inadvertently fail to
follow the prescribed method of light box therapy.
Additionally, all SAD sufferers opting for the earplug treatment may
also greatly lessen the possibility of long-term UV skin damage.
First diagnosed as early as two decades ago, SAD is a condition
marked by recurring cycles of depression connected to the waning
sunshine of fall and winter months. As with most forms of depression,
symptoms of SAD can include: oversleeping, weight gain, lethargy, and in
some more severe cases, bouts of chronic hopelessness. Indeed, although
most SAD sufferers remain able to function day-to-day, there have been
cases of hospitalization due to untreated symptoms.
